Are You Embracing Your Business Sustainability Mavericks?

In traditional business settings, those who stepped out of line were considered disruptive and were usually turned back into the fold or run out of the company all together.  Today, business sustainability leaders recognize the need for creative out of the box thinking.  They need individually to push the boundaries of the organization.  So our sustainability consulting asks: How does an organization establish a culture which both encourages renegades thinking while at the same time meeting its established business objectives? The Allstate Foundation Reaches Nearly 100,000 Survivors of Domestic Violence and Educates One Million Teens on Safe Driving in 2012

Tue, 2013-03-05 05:00
More than $19 million donated to nonprofits to create safer, stronger communities

SOURCE: Allstate Foundation

DESCRIPTION:

March 5, 2013 /3BL Media/ - From ending domestic violence and supporting teen safe driving to helping Americans prepare for catastrophe, The Allstate Foundation has helped address society’s most pressing issues in 2012. More than $19 million from the Foundation supported the work of local and national nonprofits to build safe, diverse and financially strong communities.

“We know the power that financial resources can bring in tackling the challenges facing our communities, but recognize that our ultimate strength lies in the people who champion these causes in their communities,” said Vicky Dinges, vice president of corporate social responsibility at Allstate. “From Allstate employees and agency owners who donate and volunteer, to organizations assisting those in their community, together we are inspiring change and changing lives.”

The Allstate Foundation has continued to focus on saving teen lives on the road and helping survivors of domestic violence move from safety to security through financial empowerment. The Allstate Foundation has set a goal of reaching 500,000 survivors with financial empowerment services and a 50 percent reduction in teen traffic fatalities by 2015.

“We have set bold goals that will help to make a significant impact in the areas of domestic violence and teen safe driving,” said Dinges. “These two focus areas have been championed by The Allstate Foundation for more than eight years and we are pleased with the progress we’ve helped create against these two issues. The taboos around domestic violence are disappearing and we are seeing reductions in the number of teens dying on our roadways—both are significant achievements in such a short period of time.”

In 2012, The Allstate Foundation also focused on preparing and protecting people from catastrophe.

Points of Light joined with The Allstate Foundation to launch Good & Ready, an initiative designed to help people prepare themselves, their families and their communities before disaster strikes. Good & Ready is a year-round, online and on-the-ground emergency preparedness program that brings together resources, tips and volunteer opportunities into one centralized site—Goodandready.org.

During the Foundation’s 60-year history it has invested more than $300 million in communities across the country to address key social issues.

About The Allstate Foundation

Established in 1952, The Allstate Foundation is an independent, charitable organization made possible by subsidiaries of The Allstate Corporation (NYSE: ALL). Through partnerships with nonprofit organizations across the country, The Allstate Foundation brings the relationships, reputation and resources of Allstate to support innovative and lasting solutions that enhance people’s well-being and prosperity. You don't have to tell residents in the northeast USA, where Hurricane Sandy combined its tropical moisture with a deep, cold upper air flow last fall and formed "the perfect storm." Nor do you need to remind people in the American Midwest, where back-to-back snowstorms over the past several weeks followed a warmer-than-normal January. Indeed, our climate is becoming more and more “unusual.”

Does this impact investors as we approach the 2013 proxy season? Yes, big time. Shareholders are filing resolutions asking companies to disclose physical risks posed by climate change. Although these resolutions (based on sustainability issues) may not always be approved by shareowners, they can still prompt companies to take action to avoid risk to their operations, finances and reputations -- while addressing the growing climate change concerns of their investors.

SustainabilityHQ's lead story of the week outlines the dramatic impact climate change is having on the 2013 proxy season.

Darden Marks 10 Years of Harvest Food Program; Allstate Donates $10M to Fight Chicago Crime; General Mills and Haagen-Dazs Support Vanilla Farmers - CSR Minute for March 1, 2013

Fri, 2013-03-01 04:15

SOURCE: 3BL Media, LLC

DESCRIPTION:

This month, Darden Restaurants celebrates the 10th anniversary of its Harvest Program, a food rescue initiative that collects and donates unserved food and delivers it to hunger relief organizations and food banks. Darden Harvest has provided more than 62 million pounds of donated food to local organizations and food banks. The Harvest donations are safely saved, fully prepared menu items, from lasagna and vegetables to lobster. The program is the largest prepared-foods donation program that runs yearlong to benefit those in need.

Allstate is providing $5 million in funding over the next five years to reduce violent crime in Chicago. The effort also aims to improve the safety and vitality of neighborhoods throughout the city. The city’s new initiative with a private sector coalition builds on the work of the Community Anti-violence and Restoration Effort (CARE) and other city anti-violence initiatives to identify proven programs to prevent violence and expand them rapidly.

General Mills and Haagen-Dazs have teamed up in an initiative to help small vanilla famers in Madagascar to farm more sustainably. The ice cream company and the General Mills Foundation will invest $125,000 over the next two years to benefit villages in that country’s Sava region, home of the world’s highest quality vanilla. The effort will help ensure the availability of high quality vanilla for future generations, part of General Mills’ larger, sustainable sourcing program.
