STAMFORD, March 31, 2014 /3BL Media/ – Two organizations with a commitment to improving and beautifying communities across the country are pleased to bring back Taking Root™, a gardening grant program introduced last year. Troy-Bilt®, a leading manufacturer of outdoor power equipment, and Keep America Beautiful (KAB), the nation’s leading nonprofit bringing people together to build and sustain vibrant communities, will award five KAB community groups a total of $25,000 in grants and up to $6,500 in Troy-Bilt lawn care products.
KAB-certified affiliates in good standing were invited to apply for the Taking Root grant for a garden-oriented or outdoor beautification project such as starting a community garden, implementing an education program, or embarking on a cleanup effort. Among the applications received, five finalists were selected and announced today on takingroot.troybilt.com.
The public is encouraged to learn about each project and vote for a favorite on the Taking Root voting site by May 25, 2014. The organization with the most votes will receive a $12,000 cash grant, plus up to $2,000 in Troy-Bilt products. The finalist with the second most votes will be rewarded with an $8,000 grant and up to $1,500 in equipment, and the finalist with the third most votes will be rewarded with a $5,000 grant and up to $1,000 in equipment. The remaining finalists will receive Troy-Bilt products.
The five finalists, in alphabetical order, are:

New York, March 31, 2014 /3BL Media/ – The Citi Foundation today announced Pathways to Progress, a three-year $50 million initiative to unlock economic opportunity for 100,000 low-income youth in 10 cities across the United States. Pathways to Progress is the largest single commitment ever made by the Citi Foundation, and through the initiative, the Citi Foundation will work with community partners, government officials, and Citi volunteers to help young people ages 16-24 develop the workplace skills and leadership experience they will need to secure jobs and begin developing career paths. The Citi Foundation funded and developed Pathways to Progress over the last year, working with input from leading nonprofit partners. The program is focused on fostering career readiness through civic engagement, summer employment, and entrepreneurship training.
“If we want a strong labor force for generations to come, we need to make sure our country’s youth are prepared to meet the evolving needs of employers,” said Citi CEO Michael Corbat. “Through Pathways to Progress, we will connect young people with opportunities to fuel their own career ambitions and develop the skills that are needed in a 21st century economy. The professional success and civic engagement of our young men and women are critical to our economic competitiveness, and we are proud to support them.”
As job-creation efforts struggle to gain traction, Americans ages 16-24 who should be at the beginning of their working lives are facing a persistent 15% national unemployment rate – higher than many other groups – according to various sources. The economic slowdown and the decline of both manufacturing and family-run businesses all contribute to an inability of our nation’s youth to access entry-level jobs. For our country and its largest cities, the ripples of youth joblessness impact household and community stability and exacerbate the macroeconomic effects of broader unemployment.
Pathways to Progress will focus on 10 of the largest U.S. cities where Citi has a presence: Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Newark, St. Louis, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. The initiative is launching with three elements developed in tandem with leading community partners who will identify and recruit low-income young adults with demonstrated potential for success. Additional programs will be developed during the course of the three-year campaign.
Pathways to Progress aims to develop opportunities for low-income urban youth to set education and career goals and develop visions and blueprints for their professional future. The new initiative will be bolstered by the active involvement of Citi volunteers and mentors, and will complement the Citi Foundation’s longtime focus on enabling college success for low-income students. The initiative will also bring together urban policymakers, private sector stakeholders, and community leaders to learn from these programs and scale cross-sector approaches to tackling chronic youth joblessness.

LONDON, March 31, 2014 /3BL Media/ - Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) has launched a recycling challenge to co-create solutions to help improve at-home recycling habits, in partnership with open innovation platform, OpenIDEO.com. The 11-week challenge will draw on the platform’s 60,000 members from across the globe as part of CCE’s Recycle for the Future campaign.
75% of British and French people claim to ‘always’ recycle plastic bottles at home. However, recycling rates don’t reflect this with as only around half of all plastic bottles sold are currently collected for recycling in Great Britain and France. CCE’s Recycle for the Future campaign aims to identify the reasons behind the gap between people’s intentions and actions, and seek meaningful solutions to increase at-home recycling rates.
Coca-Cola Enterprises (NYSE/Euronext Paris: CCE), which manufactures, bottles and markets Coca-Cola products in Western Europe, initially commissioned a study with the University of Exeter to better understand how household dynamics influence recycling behaviours.
The pioneering study, Unpacking the Household, led by Dr Stewart Barr, observed 20 families, couples and single-person households in Great Britain and France, in their own homes, for six months. Its key findings include:
· Break a habit to make a habit - People don’t make conscious decisions about recycling. Instead people have instinctive behaviour built into their everyday lives, which doesn’t always include recycling, so new thinking is needed to help break bad habits - and shape new habits.
· Aesthetics are key - The recycling infrastructure in households must be adjusted. Additional physical space is needed to make recycling a more viable activity, but aesthetics are a barrier, with few study participants willing to make room for a recycling bin.
· Better information is required - The majority of households do not have an accurate understanding of what happens to their waste once it has been collected, with many not realising that their recycled items are returned to them as other products or packaging, e.g. shampoo bottles or t-shirts.
· Common misconceptions continue to exist - Households are sceptical about what happens to their recycling once collected, with many believing it is all ‘sent to landfill’ or ‘exported abroad.’
· Harnessing the power of community - Digital communication and social media could be put to greater use, encouraging people to form new recycling habits.
The findings from the study are now being used as a basis for setting an online challenge to help come up with innovative, yet practical solutions to encourage people across Europe to recycle more. This challenge is being executed through OpenIDEO.com’s creative, global innovation community.

The Expert Advisory Panel will include representatives from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, P&G, Forum for the Future, WRAP, FostPlus and Casino who will be looking for ideas which showcase original thinking, practical sense, and real applicability.

CUIDAD OBREGON, MEXICO, Mar. 28, 2014 /3BL Media/ – Norman Borlaug, the father of the Green Revolution, is widely credited with advancing agriculture to save 1 billion lives. While celebrating Borlaug’s legacy this week, Monsanto Chief Technology Officer and 2013 World Food Prize Laureate Robb Fraley outlined the need for continued innovation to feed a population that is expected to grow by more than 2 billion people by 2050.
Fraley addressed members of the global agriculture community today at the Borlaug Summit on Wheat for Food Security, capping a weeklong celebration of what would have been Borlaug’s 100th birthday. Borlaug was instrumental in the development and introduction of new types of wheat crops in Mexico, India, Pakistan and other countries, resulting in dramatic increases in food production that helped to avoid mass famines in the 1960s and 1970s.
While the world still benefits from Borlaug’s work, Fraley noted that demand for staple crops, including wheat, rice and corn, will double between today and 2050, creating a similar global challenge for today’s farmers and researchers.
“As we celebrate Dr. Borlaug’s contributions to agriculture and remember the billion lives he saved, it’s important for us to also keep in mind the next billion lives, and the billion after that,” Fraley said. “We must continue to invest in innovations that will help to safely and sustainably feed our rapidly growing population, even as farmers face growing challenges from climate change.”
Fraley outlined the range of challenges faced by farmers today, including the vast impact of climate change, which is already leading to more volatile weather and drought conditions, changing crop planting zones and increased threats from insects, weeds and disease.
Fraley predicted that future advances in agricultural technology would be realized from a combination of a systems approach that has five distinct technology platforms: breeding, biotechnology, crop protection, biological, and data science. Disruptive technologies tend to follow a certain trajectory. First, they are outliers, often ignored, and typically on the cusp of never entering the market. But, for the successful ones, a tipping point is ultimately reached, after which the technology goes viral and changes the status quo it was designed to replace. In the new energy revolution, Tesla is one such company that has surpassed the tipping point and threatens to change the way we produce, distribute, and consume electricity.
It isn't just Tesla's sleek and beautiful electric vehicles that will be key to disrupting the status quo. At a current price point of around $80,000, most people en masse won’t be able to afford a Tesla, even though the company has plans to develop more affordable models. But what makes Tesla unique, besides the strange genius of CEO Elon Musk, is the potential diversification of its offerings, highlighted recently by the company's announcement to build the GigaFactory, a $5-billion battery factory that will employ 6,500 workers.
Set to open in about three years, the new GigaFactory will be large enough to manufacture more lithium-ion batteries than the entire industry produces now, and due to its sheer scale, is expected to reduce the cost of batteries by almost one-third.

The program includes 40 different initiatives that the company is taking to improve operational efficiency and reduce fuel use and emissions from its transportation fleet. Fuel Sense makes use of the expertise of its flight crews, engineers and others to identify and deploy fuel efficiency opportunities. The company also relies on cross-industry partnerships to enhance monthly fuel savings.

The plant received the silver designation just over four years after adopting the WCM operating system following a three-day audit March 26-28, 2014. Silver is awarded after earning a minimum of 60 points in 10 technical and 10 managerial pillars by demonstrating clear WCM know-how and competence through employee-conducted pillar presentations and a review of projects that have been expanded across the shop floor.
“Accomplishing silver is a significant achievement as it demonstrates a deeper understanding of the WCM methodology,” said Mauro Pino, Vice President and Head of Manufacturing/WCM, Chrysler Group LLC. “We couldn’t be more proud of our Windsor employees who embraced the opportunity to lead the way for our other facilities.
“Together with our Unifor partners, the Windsor plant is showing its commitment to making our manufacturing facilities among the best in the world,” said Pino.
World Class Manufacturing is a methodology that focuses on reducing waste, increasing productivity, and improving quality and safety in a systematic and organized way. WCM engages the workforce to provide and implement suggestions on how to improve their jobs and their plants.
WCM was first implemented by Fiat in 2006 and introduced to Chrysler Group as part of the alliance between the two companies in June 2009. Since that time, the Company has saved more than $1 billion in controllable manufacturing costs as a result of the implementation of WCM.
During an audit, zero to five points are awarded for each of the 10 technical pillars, which include safety, workplace organization, logistics and the environment, and for each of the 10 managerial pillars such as management commitment, clarity of objectives, allocation of people, motivation of operators and commitment of the organization. A score of 100 would indicate World Class.
Two WCM certified auditors from Fiat – the Head of WCM and the Head of Manufacturing Planning Control for Europe, the Middle East and Africa – performed the audits. One of the auditors previously served as the Plant Manager of Fiat’s gold Bielsko-Biala plant in Poland.
Windsor earned the first WCM award level, a bronze designation, in April 2012. Three other facilities currently hold bronze status – Dundee Engine Plant (Mich.), Toledo Assembly Complex (Ohio) and Saltillo Truck Assembly Plant (Mex.).
The Windsor Assembly Plant, built in 1928, is home to the award-winning Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans. The plant runs three shifts with nearly 4,700 employees. In 2013, the plant celebrated 30 years of minivan leadership.

The World Health Organization reported some promising news this week: confirmed diagnoses of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) cases more than tripled between 2009 and 2013 in 27 countries targeted through an innovative collaboration called EXPAND-TB.
Why is this a good thing? Because diagnosis is the critical first step in treating and caring for people affected by MDR-TB. It is also important for their families and friends, who are at risk and other close contacts in the community. Yet most cases are missed – in 2012, less than a quarter of the 450,000 people estimated to have fallen ill with MDR-TB were diagnosed and officially notified to ministries of health.
Through initiatives like EXPAND-TB, we are starting to close that gap.
