13 Hot Research Reports on Corporate Sustainability Issues, Tools and Trends

Thu, 2013-05-23 06:00

SOURCE: Sustainable Brands

DESCRIPTION:

As the fourth and final piece in our 4-part series of ‘hot lists’ (check out our other picks for hot productsbooks and business model innovations), this week we introduce 13 hot research reports tracking the state of various aspects of corporate sustainability, as well as respective consumer attitudes and behaviors. Each of these studies will be represented by its authors, as well as its key stakeholder groups, at Sustainable Brands ’13 in San Diego, CA, June 3-6. Without further ado, here is a wealth of knowledge you won’t want to miss:

  1. The 2013 Sustainability Leaders Report, by GlobeScan and SustainAbility, presents a well-respected and well-founded snapshot of the current state of sustainability leadership in the private sector, as well as among top actors in the scientific community, the non-profit community, multilateral organizations, nationally elected government officials and social entrepreneurs. The results are based on a survey of a large pool of established sustainability experts from the corporate world, government, non-governmental organizations, academia and the media.
  2. Natural Capital at Risk: The Top 100 Externalities of Business, by Trucost and the TEEB for Business Coalition, dives into a deeply complex but absolutely vital topic that many believe will make or break the future of sustainability: identification and valuation of the world’s biggest natural capital risks for business, investors and governments. This effort comes well-complemented by another recent TEEB report, in partnership with InnovaStrat: Organizational Change for Natural Capital Management: Strategy and Implementation

DESCRIPTION:

The growing interest in corporate and institutional "Sustainability" and "Responsibility" is a global phenomenon.  Each day as we monitor news, trends and activities related to S&R, we see examples of business organizations innovating -- from large-cap publicly-traded firms to small start ups and entrepreneurial ventures.  Public sector and not-for-profit institutions are embracing S&R strategies and programmatic approaches.  Investors are tuning in - and long established investor-centric organizations are driving change in corporate and investor behavior.  These include leading universities such as Harvard, and federal, state and municipal agencies.
Old building (c 1931) become new again - and more sustainable, as you will see in the Highlights this week with the focus on New York City's landmark - the Empire State Building.

Virtually every sphere of business activity is being impacted by the changes in how we consider the corporation - one of the miracle creations of humankind, with its ability to marshal resources (financial, human, natural) and make things happen.  Levi Strauss creates sustainable jeans -- what's next!  And, a perennial question - what responsibility to society does the corporation have (in return for the benefits enjoyed such as rule of law)?  What is the appropriate relationship of the corporation to society?

Answers are more frequently found now in the close examination of corporate sustainability.  This week's Highlights focuses on a few aspects (and answers) -- you'll news about companies and investors and NGOs and public sectors below.  Be sure to read Lisa Woll's comments as carried on Bloomberg -- "Call It What You Like - New Investing Approach Gains Followers." She's CEO of the US Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investment (US SIF) -- see below Asset Managers, US Pension Funds, Sovereign Wealth Funds heading.

As always, we select an important player in the S&R space and present a short introduction to the organization...as we "Watch the Watchers.". This week it is Global Water Partnership in focus. More complete profile and other information is on our SustainabilityHQ(tm) platform - available by subscription.

13 Hot Books from Sustainability Thought Leaders

Wed, 2013-05-22 06:00

SOURCE: Sustainable Brands

DESCRIPTION:

Continuing with our series of "hot lists" (check out our lists of hot products and business model innovations) this third installment previews 13 hot books whose authors will speak at Sustainable Brands ’13 next month. As with the previous two lists, we had trouble isolating only 13 highlights from the sea of world-class thought leadership active in the Sustainable Brands community. While we do feel we simply have to share these 13 recently released must-reads, we’re also adding a bonus list of 10 other slightly older, but still absolutely indispensable, sustainability books whose authors will also be with us at SB’13 in June. Have a look and take notes:

  1. The Upcycle: Beyond Sustainability — Designing for Abundance, by William McDonough and Michael Braungart, is the long-awaited sequel to Cradle to Cradle, arguably one of the few most influential sustainability books of all time. The Upcycle promises to be at least as impactful and comes fresh off the printing press!
  2. Plowing with Pigs and Other Creative, Low-Budget Homesteading Solutions, by Oscar H. Will and Karen Will, offers practical tips on achieving a high degree of self-sufficiency, homesteader style, through smart use of ‘sweat equity’ and other often underestimated resources.

Mobile Communication is Key to Strong Cause Marketing Relationships

Thu, 2013-05-16 08:15

SOURCE: mGive

DESCRIPTION:

Cause marketing grows out of the relationships between nonprofits, corporations and their various stakeholders. Communication provides the path to successful, win-win outcomes for all partners. And mobilecommunication in particular can strengthen those relationships and help you realize the full power of cause marketing.

Here are just some of the ways mobile communication can strengthen your cause marketing relationships and programs:

Empowers visibility and engagement in a multi-screen world

  • Text provides easy access to participation while making campaigns more relevant to mobile supporters
  • Cell phone penetration in the U.S. is greater than 100 percent
  • By 2014, mobile internet is predicted to take over desktop internet usage (source: Microsoft Tag, 2012)

Increases message credibility

  • Consumers get the engagement level they want, in the way they want it
  • Supporters must provide permission to be messaged through text
  • Text donors like to give through their mobile device because it is easy, convenient and allows them to retain control

Provides a heightened level of supporter engagement

  • Mobile is one of the preferred methods of giving. The top three ways donors reported they like to give were 1) online, 2) mobile, and; 3) special events
  • Americans keep their phones within arms reach 19 hours per day and 85 percent of text messages are read within 15 minutes of receipt.

Increases the efficiency of marketing dollars spent

  • Mobile is more cost-effective than direct mail, building a website, telemarketing, staging live events and other traditional forms of fundraising.
  • Mobile can integrate and support multiple channels at the same time, including email, website, social media and apps.

Enables measurement and listening abilities for all partners

  • Mobile provides a quick conduit for feedback through polling as well as providing easy methods for sharing photos, comments or thoughts.

Mobile communication is essential to building winning cause marketing relationships and outcomes. A cause-marketing program without effective mobile communication is like going to the top floor of the Sears (Willis) Tower – by climbing the stairs. You might make it to the top, but it will be a long, difficult slow climb. Mobile communication, like the elevator to the Observation Deck of the Sears Tower, can easily lift your cause marketing to new heights – without causing you to break a sweat.

Look for the mGive team at the Cause Marketing Forum in Chicago to discuss ways in which mobile communication can strengthen your cause marketing relationships. Or contact the mGive team to set an appointment while we are there by emailing Cassie Bair, VP of Marketing.

Fundraising for Charity: Solicitation

Mon, 2013-05-13 10:15

SOURCE: mGive

DESCRIPTION:

You’ve done the research. You’ve identified likely supporters, the right messages, tactics and tools to win them over. You’ve cultivated relationships. And now it’s time to ask for a donation. If you have gone through all the previous principles of fundraising, you are ready to solicit.

Here is a partial list of solicitation “dos.”

Make Fundraising Easy: Look at your solicitation from the donor’s viewpoint: is it easy, convenient and does the donor control the process? These are all reasons why donors like text donations, according to the mGive 2012 Text Giving Survey. There’s no reason they shouldn’t be factors of any appeal.

Ask. And Repeat: Consider asking for donations on a recurring basis. Sometimes a one-time donation is the right thing to do. For other donors, asking for a routine or recurring donation works. For example, according to the Text Giving Study, one out of every four respondents want to have the ability to have automatic monthly recurring text donations added to their phone bill.

Say “Thank You”: No one takes their donors for granted, right? Well, if you don’t thank donors for a gift, being unappreciated is exactly how they might feel. According to the Fall 2012 Charity Dynamics and NTEN Donor Engagement Survey, 21 percent of donors reported they had never been thanked.

Broaden Your Appeal: According to the Donor Engagement Study, supporters are willing to do a lot of different activities for their favorite charities. Thirty-six percent said they volunteer one time or more and a significant group said they participate in fundraising events at least one time per year. You can also ask existing donors to share information with and recruit friends or family. According to the Donor Engagement Study, “A significant number of respondents spent time trying to get their friends and family involved with their favorite charity. Most frequently, donors encouraged others to donate and volunteer… Donors also forwarded emails and eNewsletters from their favorite charity often.”

Solicit Strategically: Think about how to get higher levels of support from existing donors. A supporter who volunteers at an event could also be asked to participate in other ways. Tier or prioritize activities like donations or volunteering in a continuum, with low engagement on one end and higher involvement on the other. Set goals to move your donors along this continuum. Someone making a text donation should be encouraged to engage on your website and possibly make a larger donation there. Someone who attends an event or gives money can be asked to recruit friends and family, or share your message through their activities in social media.

Solicitation is not the ending point of the four principles of fundraising. You build your appeals based on the research, identification and cultivation work you do – and your solicitation results feed back into those first three steps. Fundraising is a cycle. What your donors do today fuels your research, helps you identify new sources and messages for engagement and offers new ways to cultivate stronger relationships.

Dear all,

G&A Institute in collaboration with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Focal Point USA would like to invite you to a webinar on 15 May, from noon – 2.30pm EST.

This webinar will feature “Master Class 1 – Refresher Course & G4 Update” and will feature perspectives from Evan Harvey from NASDAQ OMX, and trainers from Lead Canada and Sustainalytics.

In this session, you will be able to learn how the GRI Sustainability Reporting Framework can help you focus your approach to sustainability performance measurement and management.

GRI experts will explain how GRI’s principles for content (materiality, inclusiveness, sustainability context and completeness) lead to a report on sustainability impacts that matter most.

You will also find out how G4 has been revised based on US feedback and learn which parts have remained untouched.

G4 Campaign
GRI’s Focal Point USA is very excited about the North American participation in GRI’s Global Conference – already 140 people have registered from the USA and Canada so far. Next to facilitating the North American Delegation to our Conference in Amsterdam from 21 – 24 May, they are organizing a G4 Campaign in both Canada and the USA. Each event of this Campaign will be unique due to support from a GRI Certified Training Partner, one or more of Sector Leaders and a G4 Campaign Sponsor. By truly engaging the network for these events, thee Masterclasses will be interactive and addressing GRI’s Sustainability Framework from different angles.

Master Class 2 & 3
After the Global Conference (22-24 May in Amsterdam), the following GRI Master Classes will be organized as part of the G4 Campaign:

Master Class 2 – G4 Download
Learn about the freshly released G4 Guidelines for the first time! Experts will explain GRI’s new guidance for governance and remuneration; value chain and boundary; management approach and materiality; levels of application and  explain why and which new disclosures have been created for GHG, anti-corruption and supply chain reporting. You will hear how G4’s renewed focus on materiality will impact your reporting and how GRI’s inventory of disclosures can be used to create a report that is truly tailored to your organization.

Master Class 3 – G4 Applied to the US/Canadian context

5 top communications questions answered

SOURCE: Symantec

DESCRIPTION:

Fostering a two-way, inclusive dialogue with stakeholders is key to the success of corporate sustainability programs. But developing a communications strategy that delivers the transparency stakeholders demand, in an engaging, enriching way, is challenging.

For this Sustainable Brands article, I spoke with the author about the various ways Symantec is communicating to its stakeholders through social media tools such as Chatter, this blog, our intranet, and more.

One key piece of advice: Don’t just talk to your audience — listen. Do it often, do it consistently and do it thoughtfully. You can read the full article here.

Sustainability Reporting and the S&P 500 ®
A new study out from the researchers at Sustainable Investments Institute (SI2) and the Investor Responsibility Research Center (IRRC) looks closely at the large-cap companies in the Standard & Poor’s S&P 500 Index and  disclosure and reporting practices related to sustainability and ESG performance factors.  All but one company, the analysts say do some kind of reporting – but the range of reporting is quite wide.  “Sustainability Reporting is widespread,” say the researchers, but connection to bottom line is sometimes missing.”  Of the 499 companies, 7 integrate financial and sustainability information in their reporting.

These are: American Electric Power, Clorox, Dow Chemical, Eaton, Ingersoll Rand, Pfizer, and Southwest Airlines.  43% link executive comp to some type of sustainability criteria.  You can read more at the link on the top story (below).

Guest Post: The White House Blip: Would Ethical Standards be Helpful?

Thu, 2013-05-02 07:30

SOURCE: 3BL Media, LLC

DESCRIPTION:

CELESA HORVATH

This morning, an Associated Press Twitter account was hacked, and a false tweet reported explosions in the White House that injured Barack Obama. There’s been no better illustration of the potential impact of social media on the economy than this:

In just two minutes, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 145 points!

Once AP stated its account had been hacked and the White House confirmed there was no incident, markets quickly recovered.  Nevertheless, the ‘blip’ stands as a great example of how significant the influence of social media has become.

It also represents another facet of social media use in respect of which comprehensive ethical standards may be warranted.  Although ethical standards are unlikely to be followed by hackers, such standards may assist legitimate social media users to adopt responsible use policies that will protect against inappropriate responses to unconfirmed or suspect information disseminated via social media.  From the early media coverage of the Twitter hacking incident this morning, it is apparent that some traders responded in a knee-jerk manner, while others waited.

How might general ethical standards or company-specific social media policies for the financial sector be useful in such instances?  Perhaps by providing criteria to guide traders in evaluating the legitimacy of information obtained through social media, encouraging responsible communication with stakeholders (e.g., clients), and supporting decision-making in the face of the ethical dilemma of whether to intentionally gain from someone else’s mistake.

Jake's Journey

Tue, 2013-04-23 04:00

SOURCE: Southwest Airlines

DESCRIPTION:

Sometimes, even at a Company like Southwest, your Coworkers surprise you in ways that are emotionally indescribable.  My childhood friend, Beth Schied, is the mother of four great kids.  Years ago Beth's youngest child, Jake, was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma, a cancer of the eye, at 18 months old.

In March of 2008, Jake had his left eye removed.  Jake, now seven years old, has gone through so much in his young life.  He has had countless surgeries and chemotherapy to rid him of this terrible disease.

Jake is currently cancer free, but his vision in his right eye is very low, and he is legally blind.  Soon, Jake's vision may be gone completely.  This very fun-loving and playful little boy has stayed strong, and I am blessed to know he and his family.

Recently, I saw a Facebook post from Beth.  She posted that she was looking to get Chicago Blackhawks tickets for Jake, who is a huge fan (and what Chicagoland-area youngster wouldn't be, with the season the 'Hawks have had?!).  Beth wanted Jake to see a game before he is no longer able to do so.  After I read her post, my mission became clear.  I was bound and determined to get Jake to a game.

I went to work later that evening with Jake on my mind, and sent a simple email to my fellow Southwest Customer Service Agents in Chicago, gauging whether anyone had tickets they'd be willing to donate for this young boy and his caring mother.

One email.  That's all it took.

The floodgates opened, and I received countless emails and phone calls from people asking how they could help.  Quickly, word spread to the entire Chicago Midway station; a full-blown fundraiser and rally to get Jake to a game.

People were collecting money, trying to get limos, tickets, gear; anything to make the experience memorable.  People who did not even know Jake, or even me, for that matter, stepped up to make this happen.

For days, my head was spinning.  I couldn't fathom the outpouring of support; after only a week, I knew in my heart Jake was going to get to a game.  After weeks of donations, four tickets to the Blackhawks game were secured.  I never gave so many hugs or shed more tears of joy than I did during this journey for Jake.  We had done it.  Jake was going to a Blackhawks game.  And then something amazing happened--the Blackhawks found out about Jake's request.

Four tickets turned into six, right up against the glass.  A locker room tour was organized, and Jake got to meet and get autographs from many of the players.  Jake's name was featured on the Jumbotron at the game, and he's now stocked with Blackhawks gear and toys.

All of the items were given to Jake and his family at the airport, to their complete surprise.

When I went home the evening after the surprise, I knew that I had a made a little boy very happy, and many hearts were filled with joy.  I have my Southwest Family to thank for that.

G&A Institute & 3BL Media Announce Service for Companies to Achieve CSR & Sustainability Awards & Recognition

Tue, 2013-04-16 02:35

SOURCE: Governance & Accountability Institute, Inc.

DESCRIPTION:

New York, NY and Northampton, MA, April 16, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Governance & Accountability Institute (G&A), a strategies and consulting firm focusing on Sustainability and 3BL Media, the leading distributor of Corporate Social Responsibility, Sustainability, Health, and Energy news and content, today announced G&A Institute's Awards & Recognition Program.

G&A Institute inaugurated its Awards & Recognitions program to assist client companies in navigating the increasing number of leadership awards and recognitions now available for corporate sustainability and responsibility leaders.

Louis D. Coppola, Executive Vice President and Partner of Governance & Accountability Institute, said: " The G&A Institute team offers comprehensive services to help companies achieve their fair share of recognitions and awards. There are more than 150 independent third parties today in the sustainability / ESG / SRI space actively communicating opinions about corporations' sustainability achievements. These organizations are generating reports and opinions on public companies for investors and analysts; and create ratings, rankings, ESG scores, and "best of" reputational lists."

"Communication about sustainability accomplishments and reporting is key to positioning the company for consideration," Mr. Coppola said, "and we help clients to become more organized and tailored in their approach, better preparing them to enter competitions or communicate about their sustainability journey -- and connecting with the decision-makers in the grantor-universe."

According to Hank Boerner, Chairman of Governance & Accountability Institute: "More than half of the companies in the S&P 500 Index® and the Fortune 500® universe are now publishing sustainability reports. Many small- and mid-cap and privately-owned companies are reporting. There is a growing information clutter – and a parallel growth in the number of awards and recognitions by third parties. It is important for company managers to ask themselves: 'Is my company receiving its fair share of recognitions? Are our efforts being recognized – and rewarded (or “awarded”) where it counts?'"

As the exclusive Data Partner for the USA for the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), G&A Institute thoroughly analyzes hundreds of corporate sustainability reports each year, including the specific awards for corporate sustainability and responsibility progress.

In making the announcement, Greg Schneider, CEO of 3BL Media, said: "This partnership underscores 3BL Media’s commitment to ensure that companies that are committed to best practices in sustainability have the greatest opportunity for being recognized for their work through ESG, Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility awards and recognitions."

The G&A Institute team members interact with many of the organizations in the awards and recognitions space -- including ESG analysts, NGOs, index managers, publishers of lists and rankings, and rankings, issue advocates, and other types of organizations.

Mr. Coppola said that G&A Institute maintains a dynamic database of awards & recognitions that is updated daily and used to help the team match companies and award grantors.

Global Sustainable Brands Community Leaders to Gather in San Diego for Purpose-Driven Brand Innovation Conference

Mon, 2013-04-15 06:00

SOURCE: Climate Counts

DESCRIPTION:

SAN FRANCISCO, April 15, 2013 /3BL Media/ – Members of Sustainable Brands®, a global community of business, sustainability and brand innovators from over 50 countries focused on how brands can succeed by shaping a better future, are set to convene for their largest annual community gathering at Sustainable Brands ’13 (SB’13) June 3-6 this year. The U.S. conference takes place in San Diego, CA where for the 7th year, businesses, solutions and service providers, NGOs, academics and entrepreneurs will convene to collaborate on enabling successful purpose-driven innovation. The theme for this year’s community gathering, From Revolution to Renaissance, focuses on shifts in society and highlights breakthroughs in market innovations that are helping reinvigorate global economies and building healthy natural systems.

“While some are still arguing the merits of a focus on environmental and social innovation, members of the Sustainable Brands community are moving forward to imagine and validate breakthrough examples of lower impact products and services that point the way to a future we can look forward to,” said KoAnn Skrzyniarz, Founder of Sustainable Brands. “As our conversation expands around the world, we look forward to getting our community together in June to share new insights and ideas, as well as to discuss how we can continue to eliminate obstacles to shaping a flourishing future.”

Morning plenary sessions will highlight transformative ideas and address market trends and drivers that are shaping the future of business in the 21st century. Six afternoon breakout streams focus conversation around core areas of innovation, including: Business Strategy & Metrics, Employee Engagement & Organizational Change, Supply Chain & Manufacturing, Product & Service Innovation, Consumer Insights & Behavior Change, and Communications. Sessions encourage interactive discussion among participants designed to share not just ‘The What’ on the forward edge of brand innovation, but also ‘The Why’, and ‘The How’ as well. Some sessions will serve as community dialogue starters geared to address obstacles faced by many and surface on the spot ideas about how these might be overcome.

Community members set to share learning and start conversation include Natasha Davidson, Area Marketing Manager at Philips, who will talk about sustainable innovation in emerging markets; Kim Lopdrop, Sr. VP Business Development at Darden Restaurants, will tee up a discussion about how brands are adding value through innovative investments in ecosystem services; and Wood Turner, VP Sustainable Innovation at Stonyfield Farms, will talk about whole systems shift in the food industry. Additional program and speaker information can be found on the conference website, which is being updated on a regular basis with new conversation topics and participants.

DESCRIPTION:

CR Magazine Recognizes Southwest Airlines on 100 Best Corporate Citizens List!

By: Linda Rutherford

We’re in the business of flying airplanes and connecting people to what’s most important in their lives, but our impact goes beyond the airport.  Our philosophy of doing the right thing spills over into the communities we serve and the places our Customers and Employees call home.  That’s why I couldn’t be more proud to share that Corporate Responsibility Magazine recognized Southwest Airlines in their 14th annual list of 100 Best Corporate Citizens in the world!  Not only are we excited to receive this recognition, but we are the only commercial airline to be honored as a leader in the commitment to transparency and responsible business practices.

As America’s leading voice on corporate responsibility, the Magazine formed its rankings from publicly available information in seven categories—environment, climate change, employee relations, human rights, governance, finance, and philanthropy.  You can check out the complete 100 Best Corporate Citizens list by visiting the Corporate Responsibility Magazine’s web site.

It’s our desire to make a difference, and it’s what keeps us giving back for more than 40 years.  Going above and beyond, making Customers feel at home, Employees volunteering their time to the community, this recognition is about Southwest’s greatest asset—our People.  Here’s a big thank you to our Employees for everything they do to make Southwest known for being a good corporate citizen!
